Hybrid Striped Bass

About

  • Our hybrid striped bass, also known as a sunshine bass, is created by cross-breeding a female white bass, and a male striped bass  is a sunshine bass.
  • Hybrids live in slow-moving streams, lakes, ponds, and large reservoirs; they rarely live in shallow waters.
  • The incorporation of white bass genes allows hybrids to have a greater tolerance for warm water temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Hybrid striped bass came to be part of aquaculture in the United States in the late 1980s. Today, hybrids are a hard-fighting sought-after sport fish among anglers.

Size

  • Average adult size will range between 15 to 20 inches and don't typically exceed 10 lbs.

Reproduction

  • Our Hybrid Striped Bass do not reproduce and depend on restocking.  We spawn the fish indoors during the spring time each year.

Diet

  • Hybrid striped bass are voracious eaters and very aggressive.  A hybrid striped bass diet includes white and black crappie, bluegill, shad, sunfish, and the fathead minnows—Threadfin and Gizzard shad are the main prey species. Fish under 50 mm feed mostly on crustacean zooplankton. After growing beyond 50 mm, the young hybrid’s diets consist of mostly small fish, insects, and large zooplankton.

Edibility

  • This hard-fighting sportfish has delicious white, firm, and flaky meat. You find hybrid striped bass in many upscale restaurants in the United States.  This fish is a low-fat source for omega-3 fatty acids and selenium.  The fact that Hybrid Striped Bass is farm raised helps control healthy diet and avoid the consumption of microplastics that is becoming more prevasive in the wild.
